Converting an image to grayscale removes all color information and replaces it with luminance values — the perceived brightness of each pixel. Unlike a simple average of RGB channels, the standard grayscale formula applies weighted coefficients (approximately 21% red, 72% green, 7% blue) that reflect how the human eye perceives brightness. Green contributes the most because our eyes are most sensitive to it. This produces natural-looking black-and-white images that maintain depth and contrast, rather than washed-out flat conversions.
Grayscale images have a wide range of professional applications. Photographers use grayscale conversion to evaluate tonal contrast and composition without the distraction of color. Designers use it to verify that UI elements remain readable for users with color blindness. Developers use grayscale images to reduce file sizes for assets where color is unnecessary, such as textures, masks, and print-ready documents. Because our tool processes everything in the browser using the Canvas API, your original file never leaves your device.
